Dr. William H. Bates, M.D. (1865-1931) was a prominent American ophthalmologist who discovered a method of Natural Eyesight Improvement at the beginning of the twentieth century. While working with thousands of patients he discovered that vision is variable and by eliminating glasses and teaching his clients natural vision habits, they were able to improve their eyesight. This caused him to give up his practice of conventional ophthalmology and devote himself to furthering his research and teaching others how to prevent and improve nearsightedness, farsightedness, presbyopia, astigmatism, strabismus, glaucoma and cataracts. Like Galileo, the work of Dr. Bates was ridiculed, and his peers in ophthalmology considered him a bit of a heretic. If his teachings and research had been widely accepted over one hundred years ago countless people today could be living a life free of corrective lenses. This method of natural vision improvement was and still is used to restore sight through natural, normal, healthy vision habits while alleviating the strain caused by poor vision habits. Dr. Bates wrote the book Perfect Sight Without Glasses as well as published a monthly magazine called Better Eyesight to create awareness and educate the general public. Natural Eyesight Improvement is the culmination of knowledge attained by the research of Dr. Bates and is now commonly known as “The Bates Method”.
